The House / Responsibility

Create with intention

At Burgundy Paris, we believe a beautiful object deserves the time it takes to be made correctly, but also thought given to the steps that come before and after it is made.

An approach built over time

The number of pieces we make, the choice of our leathers, the way we work, and the possibility of repairing a bag years later: these are the decisions, sometimes discreet, that shape our responsible approach.

We move forward with the wish to do things with more care, to limit what can be limited, and to build a house whose pieces can accompany, for a long time, those who choose them.

Our approach is built around three commitments: the environment, the people who bring our craft to life, and support for causes close to our heart.

Making
with restraint

Made-to-order production, materials sourced from identified houses, and the possibility of repairing pieces over time form the first three pillars of our approach.

Anti fast fashion

At Burgundy Paris, we have chosen to make our pieces to order.

This choice is also a way of respecting the material. Every leather deserves to be worked with care, and we prefer to make a piece for someone who has chosen it.

We favour a measured production this way, in keeping with how we work: limited runs, artisanal know-how, and pieces designed to last for years.

Leathers

Choosing a leather begins with the trust we place in those who work it.

Our leathers come from three French houses: the Alran tannery in Mazamet, founded in 1903, the Haas tanneries in Alsace, founded in 1842, and Rémy Carriat in Espelette, founded in 1927.

All three hold the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label and are Leather Working Group (LWG) certified. They are also members of the Fédération Française de la Tannerie-Mégisserie.

Houses with which we share
a demand for quality material.

Houses recognised for their craftsmanship, with whom we share a particular attention to material and to the quality of the work.

Whenever possible, we favour these French sources. It is a way of staying close to our suppliers, of knowing the materials we work with, and of limiting the distances travelled before they reach our workshop.

Our goat, calf, lamb and young bull leathers come from the food industry. The animals are not raised for their skin alone.

Exclusive and one-of-a-kind pieces

Certain exclusive or one-of-a-kind pieces may use leathers sourced from abroad. These choices meet specific creative or material needs.

The origin of the leathers concerned is stated on the product page. They do not represent the usual sourcing of our permanent collection.

Exotic skins

The exotic skins we use come from legal trade, subject to applicable regulations.

Each skin is accompanied by the required traceability documents, including a CITES permit when necessary. These documents make it possible to identify its origin and trace its journey.

Made to last, and to be repaired

A well-made bag deserves to go on living.

At Burgundy Paris, we have chosen the saddle stitch, a seam sewn by hand, stitch by stitch. Beyond the beauty of the gesture, this construction makes it possible to work on a seam without having to take the whole piece apart.

Every Burgundy Paris piece is designed to be repaired over time, with no time limit, depending on the nature of the intervention and the availability of materials.

A seam to redo, a hardware piece to replace, an edge finish to restore, or an element to replace: we want to be able to accompany our pieces over the years, as far as this is technically possible.

Repairs are subject to certain conditions.

Offcuts

Working with leather also means dealing with what remains after cutting.

We keep the offcuts that can still be used. The largest find their place in other creations or in small leather goods.

The smallest are used for our dyeing and edge-finishing tests, as well as for our temperature and pressure tests during hot stamping, skiving and other technical operations.

Every piece of leather can still have something to offer. We try to give it that chance.

The unseen hands that keep a craft alive

Behind every leather, every seam and every finished piece, there are people.

Houses that keep trades alive

The choice of our suppliers is therefore not based on material quality alone. We work with tanneries established in France, and we care about the conditions in which these trades are practised and passed on.

Recognised know-how

Alran, Haas and Rémy Carriat all three hold the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, a distinction awarded by the French State that recognises their know-how and the people who keep it alive.

Keeping a craft alive

At Burgundy Paris, we want our work to reflect this same care: practising a craft attentively, under dignified conditions, and helping to keep alive a know-how that deserves to continue.

In Paris

Our pieces are sewn in Paris, in our workshop. That is where we take the time to work each material, to make each seam, and to give shape to our creations.

Investing in good causes

We also want Burgundy Paris to be able to contribute, at its own scale, to causes that go beyond the simple realm of leather goods.

A share of our annual profits is donated, according to the choices expressed by our customers over the year.

Access to training in leather craftsmanship.

Sustainable development and research.

Animal welfare.

We want these donations to be a concrete way of living out our convictions, without claiming to solve, on our own, the issues these causes address.

Choices
that continue
after the purchase.

Responsibility cannot be reduced to a promise. It is built through a series of concrete decisions: what we choose, what we produce, who we work with, and the way we support our pieces over time.

This approach will keep evolving with the House, its practices, and what we can still improve.
